Our History

Where It Began

In 1996, Naomi and David Parry saw more than just a need; they felt a calling.

Naomi experienced the healing power of horses firsthand after a traumatic car accident. Her physical and emotional recovery was deeply shaped by the steady presence of horses. She came to believe wholeheartedly in their unique ability to comfort, heal, and empower.

Inspired by her own transformation, Naomi and David took a leap of faith. In May of 1996, Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) was born, with just one horse and one rider. As their vision began to take shape, MTR was graciously welcomed to operate at Waters End Farm in Annapolis, Maryland, thanks to the support of Janet Richardson-Pearson.

That very first lesson wasn’t glamorous, but it was powerful. A shy young girl arrived, trembling with fear and anxiety, quite literally shaking in her boots.  But by the end of the session, something had changed. A shaggy pony, with patient steps and an open heart, helped guide her from tears and trepidation to high fives, hugs, and pure joy.

That single, unforgettable ride sparked something bigger, a movement.

What began as a dream on borrowed land has grown into a nationally accredited nonprofit, now located on 25 peaceful acres in Crownsville, Maryland. Since 2000, MTR has served hundreds of children, adults, veterans, and first responders each year, all through the transformative connection between humans and horses.

From the very beginning, MTR has stood on the belief that horses do more than carry us; they lift us.
